I agree with clients owning the domain.  It's good business continuity
practice.

I have clients register the domain, after discussing briefly who they might
want to register though.  I have them register with a name and password they
don't mind sharing with me.  If they aren't "capable" of registering it, I
still have them do it - whether I walk them through it or wait for their
"cousin" to help.

This way, in theory you have their credit card information, not vice versa.
 That said, if any information beyond the last four digits and maybe the
expiration is available or visible at any moment, you need to switch
registrars anyway.  The only risk should be renewing or registering other
domains and increasing the charges on the credit card - not the exposure of
the full details of that card.

If you go crazy on their card registering domains, they can refuse charges
and probably press charges.
