I've used Confluence & Jira in one place and I can't say it did a good job. Most ppl hated it actually regardless of their background.
Also used Basecamp and that was much better but was still lacking some good features. Currently using Asana and I'd say it gives basecamp a run for the money. I like Asana's UI and workflow better but Basecamp did a better job of pointing out tasks that were neglected and needed attention IMO.
