Sort of Scott, The Mitrek circuit is based on what's known as a gyrator design. One method used to similate a "large" (actually modest in size) inductor without the actual physical size. And yes, it works as a shunt of sorts.
It's a very deep notch at X frequency, but quickly departs the deep notch on each side of Fcenter. I prefer the low pass and high pass route, the Com Spec TS-32 circuit works OK for most people. If you need to strip and insert, there might not be enough reduction in some basic circuits. Serious sub tone strip needs a filter with more poles (sections) or a spot on deep notch. If you have significant compression built into the audio chain, trouble often rears it's ugly head with PL's. You can "lift" the Comm Spec or CSI tone panel circuits and copy them for your homebrew job.
