Depending on what you have available, you could switch the audio coming from the unit off prior to dropping the carrier of the tx. This would allow your decoder to stop and eliminate squelch noise.
Yes, I think that's the way a lot of folks do it. I don't think there are many aftermarket encoders that have reverse burst other than the TS-64.
