David, Nothing is simpler than a thermal switch. I bought a #317-1094-ND thermoswitch from Digi-Key that closes at 50 degrees C (122 degrees F) that fills the bill perfectly, for just $9. I drilled and tapped two holes on one of the radio's heat sink fins, and mounted the switch with a dab of heat-sink compound under it to ensure good heat flow. During heavy usage of the repeater, the muffin fan runs for a few minutes- but only when needed.
