I'd buy a replacement Larsen NMO whip from HRO (they comes long enough
for 120mhz aircraft band) and cut the bottom part off until it's just a 
fraction
too long (they come with a cutting chart) and solder the rod into a PL259 and
make a swr check and then fine tune for length.  Once it's known to be the
right length, fill the cavity with nonmetallic epoxy.
