In their paper Sigma Wireless discusses space diversity at 405 Mhz and three different combining techniques, Selective (voting) Equal Gain Additive, and weighted ratio combining, and the merits of each.
In the early days of 800 smr both stations and subscriber units offered diversity antenna systems. The casting on a Johnson VX repeater has a place for a second antenna port, but I have never seen a voting circuit – seems like they uses some sort of combining technique BUT I might be wrong.
That does not say that voting won’t work, it will. For reasons cited earlier, voting might not be the optimum way to achieve space diversity gain.
When I get some time I will dig out the manuals on Johnson 800 Mhz diversity Stations and see how they do it.
