Yes the accessories are all interchangable between models. There
were a few custom (called specials by the factory) which might be
harder or incompatible. But 98% of the mikes, speakers, power
cables, control heads are interchangable. As a tinkerer you can even
use Mastr Pro stuff with alittle rewiring.

The ICOM modules have an oscillator and the crystal inside. The
tricky bit is that their are "slaves" or EC modules and modules like
the 5C or 2C. These master modules provide temperature compensation
for all of the ICOMs in a mobile like yours. Stations are slightly
different as are the E chassis mobiles. For low band, and as a ham
you can probably get crystals from a good vendor (After the recent
fiasco and name calling I refrain from any endorsement). You
probably don't need temperature compensation on low band. Strictly
speaking it is nice. It is sort of required at UHF.

I believe Kevin's site has some additional info on the oscillator
modules (ICOMs). YOU NEED A MANUAL!! This will prevent you from
asking questions that some flamers here will jump you for. There is
a site that has most of the LBIs (manuals) for download. Other
places and perhaps here you can trade or buy one surplus to others
needs. I have no low band stuff anymore or i'd send you one.

Have fun. This isn't too hard a project to start with. You have a
high probability of success in getting that ole MII running on
simplex. I hope to hear you as the band opens.

experimenting with some of the available commercial radios and the
possibility of one day building a repeater on 2m or 440. I am a
tinkerer at heart and would rather build my own stuff than buy it so
I'm hoping I will fit in here. From what I have read, MAstr II's are
as good a starting place as any and offer some good options for what
you can do. I am also looking at tinkering with a Motorola in the
future, but for now it's a GE to start with. Hope that was a good
choice.

simplex mobile. This should give me some experience with the radio
and its internal workings, tuning, and general operation. I have
purchased the bare radio on Ebay as you can see here:

this thing now. Are they all the same for the different Mastr II's
like the VHF, UHF, low band or am I going to have to find one
specifically for 50 MHz?

understand that they are housings for crystals, but can I just order
the right crystals and replace them in these housings? This whole 2C
5C EC thing is confusing. Maybe this will all make sense when I
eventually get my hands on the radio.

first attempt at working with any "non ham" radio off the shelf I
need a lot of help. I did a search on this list for any info on the
Mastr II and didn't come up with much specific info. The repeater
builder site has useful information, but some of it is over my head
right now and assumes some general knowledge about some things that i
just don't know yet.
