Re: Hustler G6-440

Hi Jeff,

I have used them with great service, but I will throw
in an advisory to check the antenna bandwidth (sweep
the antenna). Some of the fiberglass gain antennas
try to cover the entire amateur band, where the return
loss or reflected power (swr) goes out of usable
range near the band edges. If you have a repeater or
need to operate near 440 or 449.975, you should
check the antenna for proper operation.

Hustler also makes a pretty nice dual band fiberglass
antenna, which I won't use for repeater service
because it won't make the entire 10MHz repeater
band... in fact it won't make 8Mhz bandwidth with
usable SWR (reflected power - return loss). It's
probably very nice for casual base station operation
or a repeater frequency within its fixed ~7 - 8MHz
bandwith.

I really like the 2 meter and 220 antennas, but they
can suffer from water damage pretty fast if you don't
pay attention to sealing them up and keeping the
drainage port open.

If you've got a single repeater, which fits into
the G6-440 bandwidth... it should work out fine.

Another thought is the elevation of your repeater
site. The beamwidth of the Hustler Fiberglass
Antennas seems to be higher in the horizontal
plane than most commercical and many popular
metal (adjustable) antennas. Great at lower
elevation repeater sites, not so great on a
4,000 foot mountain.

Some day I'll tell the true/funny (but not so
funny to me) story of why Hustler doesn't make
the original metal dualband antenna anymore.

cheers,

repeater use ? The antenna will be mounted at the 500 ft level on a
broadcast tower and must be capable of withstanding this sometimes
violent environment. An upper antenna support cannot be used due to
the distance from the tower to the edge of the platform where the
antenna will be mounted. Thanks for your reply.
