Let's be clear about the difference between programming and tuning. In the
particular case I mentioned in a previous posting on this thread, the
TKR-750K1 repeater was factory-programmed to the correct 2m frequencies and
CTCSS tones, but the factory did not adjust ("tune") the receiver front end.
The repeater was picked up from the Kenwood dealer with all of the factory
sealing tape intact, so I know that the programming was already done before
the dealer got it.

When I put the repeater on the bench for checkout, I found that the 2m
receive sensitivity was about 1.2 uV for 12dB SINAD. On a hunch, I
programmed 160.000 MHz into the receiver and found that its sensitivity
there was about 0.32 uV for 12dB SINAD. Let's see now, 160 MHz is exactly
in the middle of the K1 range 146-174 MHz! So much for "factory tuning."

I carefully tuned the front-end helicals for best sensitivity at the 2m
receive frequency, and was able to get it to 0.25 uV, quite a bit better
than the specification of 0.35 uV. When confronted with the above findings,
the dealer (who I will not identify) claimed that the receiver is broadband
and doesn't need any tuning. I guess he never opened the service manual to
read the following statement on page 2: "The RX RF BPF (L2, L3, L5, L6, L7
on TX-RX unit A2) must be aligned to obtain the maximum sensitivity at a
programmed frequency."

Yeah, I'd sure like to trust the factory to do a complete setup. The order
papers clearly stated that the repeater was to be factory-tuned to operate
on the specified 2m frequencies. To quote Ronald Reagan: "Trust, but
verify."

the Kenwood factory will tune them at a very low cost. I can not have my
tech do them for the price the factory charges.

Next time get a factory job it is well worth it.
