Yes, they interchange completely. Yes, the ICOM's are different. The PLL exciter is better in a number of ways than the regular exciter. Keep it. (Not saying the regular exciters are bad, the PLL exciter is just better.) Pretty much the only maintenance you'll ever do to that exciter, is open the lid once in a while and press the PTT button and see that the "lock" LED lights up.
