Rob,

Sweep gen is one that automatically scans its band of frequencies.  Often there 
is a "start" pulse to allow one to sync to say a scope with detector so the 
freq response of a unit under test can be seen.

A tracking gen is same, but often is included in a scope for above same purpose.

They can be useful in tuning a duplexer in that one can see the complete 
performance, notch vs pass, without having to rock back and forth between the 2 
freqs of interest as would be the case with a simple sig gen.
