Eric, I think it's more related to ham "thriftiness" than anything else. Most of us are too quick to go for the cheaper. I'm guilty of it - but I try to reform. Yet relapses seem to happen once in a while. Luckily Radio Shack has stopped stocking anything other than batteries and cell phones ;-)
For instance, can you still buy 12 VDC, DPDT PCB-mount relays for 75 cents, $1.00 max???? I think you should be able to, but I can't seem to find them for that price any more.
