I like the older connectors much better myself.
Years ago, I used to assemble lengths of coax and solder the connectors
on, for resale. Never had any real problems back then. In this century, I
find that many of the connectors will soften and melt the insulators in
the PL259s by the time you get them properly soldered.
  KuhRappp....
I have a bunch of olders ones I bought, and except for one that has an
oversize threaded opening (adatpters won't tighten properly as they are
loose in it), they are all fairly decent. OTOH, it seems that virtually
all of the N connectors are still fairly good quality.
Going to install one when I cut down my RG8 for temporary repeater use.
That will get replaced with Heliax once I get things set and move the
repeater to the other room.
I have to use an adapter at the antenna end, as I found that the
connectors for the 7/8" Heliax won't fit into the antenna base. So have a
short smaller bit of Heliax coming about a foot out of the antenna base.
Means I either use an "N" barrel, or a female on the end of the 7/8
Heliax. With the RG8, I will be uing a barrel N, and a male N to female
UHF. The ones I have are fairly short. Any suggestions on testing them?
Other than for reflected power into a dummy load...
  YMMV
