Only 10 dB in SoCal?. You're pretty lucky there Bob. It averages much higher around here. It's amazing how bad this issue is.
The major radio companies like Motorola have found this out in recent years. Several large statewide VHF digital trunked systems have been deployed such as Virginia STARS, Wyolink and the State of South Dakota. In each of these systems serious consideration had to be given to the degradation of system coverage that results from site noise. In TIA TSB-88-B the values given for environmental noise at VHF range from 11.6 to 17.7 dB above kTB depending on the location and LULC category [rural to major metro, tables 7&8 pg. 44&45] -------------------------------------------------------------- --- In [email protected], [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: " ...except if your repeater is in SoCal, where the antenna noise temperature on 2 meters is about 10 dB above kTB, so throwing away a couple of dB between the antenna & RX isn't going to hurt you."
