Yes, but if the symptoms are minor (signals below the 12 dB SINAD point), they may not be worth the effort of chasing down their source. CTCSS can then be effectively used to keep the system quiet. Another variation of using CTCSS on a carrier-access system: set the carrier squelch to open around 20 dB quieting & use the CTCSS decoder to pull the carrier squelch level down to threshold. Keeps the low-level crud out while allowing locals without CTCSS to access the repeater, & also no annoying long squelch tail (too long to eliminate with most ADMs) on CTCSS signals. Bob NO6B
