Pete,

I always liked something like 400 Hz for impolite IDs that would need to be
played under users, and 500 Hz or higher for IDs that would stand alone. Many
radios have a peak in their acoustics between 650 Hz and 1.5 KHz, so audio
tones in that range will sound really loud on some radios.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, the 20 WPM limit in the US only applies to a
device used exclusively for ID, a loophole that allows you to send at whatever
speed you want with a modern repeater controller. But I've never understood the
point in trying to "bury" the ID or "get it over with." It's not like it
prevents anyone from continuing the conversation. I've always used 20 WPM or
less.

If you need to hide the ID on a linking system, there are notching and other
techniques which can be employed. On a local repeater's output, just send
standlone IDs without PL encode, and users have an option to hear them or not.

Subject: [Repeater-Builder] Need some advice- Tone and ID for repeater

  Morning Crew,
I need some suggestions on what tone frequency people are using for the ID on
their repeater as well as speed for the ID. I am using a repeater controller
that I can adjust the frequency and speed of the system. I want to use
something that can be heard but don't want it to be to high so they users go
deaf or have the speed to fast as its all a blur in the id.

  Suggestions?

  Thanks
