One of two things come to mind.

GE uses a "short center pin" RCA plug. If you are using a regular length RCA 
plug, the center pin will be too long and may short if pushed in too far.

The other thing that comes to mind is that when plugging in your signal 
generator, and the shield doesn't make contact with the jack, you may see a 
higher than normal signal level. I assume this happens because the signal 
generator has an impedance imbalance because it's not property terminated. 
(Someone else may jump in and explain this in more detail).
