D-STAR requires too much work to be effective at message passing for any one except for the technically inclined who like to push buttons. It is trunking radio, minus the control channel, and all of the functions performed by the control channel are delegated to the user. MotoTRBO would be akin to an LTR system, or another trunking system, with the built-in capability for handling "high-speed" data. High speed as in 9600 bps, not 100-200 bps. If there is one thing that seems certain in the PS arena, it is that Motorola is trying to sell every solution except something APCO-25 compliant, and attempting to confuse thier customers into purchasing systems which are not. Not to say that they have bad ideas -- MotoTRBO brings in the experience of iDen to two-way radio, but the FCC pushing for more narrow-banded technologies, not "dual channel" solutions.
