John at LaRue Communications, http://www.w5yi.org/page.php?id=152 Yes! Call signs are assigned by regions of the country, such as mine KF6NFW, the represents California, Alaska and Hawaii. The more specific part of the call such as prefix, or in my call KF is from California, KH is hawaii, and KA I believe is Alaska. Hawaii and Alaska doesnt have nearly the population as the rest of the country so it is fairly easy to use these methods. However in California KF just roughly indicates when I got my call issued, which was 1997 for me. the suffix (after the Number) is like a serial number just like on a car VIN.
I dont recall all of the details anymore as I dont pay much attention to them unless working a station that is new to me, then Often I will ask. I use to have charts to help for this but done any longer, however I did provide a link to W5YI and they do have the method of destruction there!
