Turns out the obvious and easy solution is to turn on the phone normally, with usb debugging on, so it's detected properly by the computer. (lsusb reports Bus 001 Device 064: ID 04e8:6601 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd Mobile Phone) and then do adb reboot download heimdall then reports heimdall detect Device detected Nexxt I'll try to flash the new recovery image.
