Hi Fil, It is possible to install and use Signal on Replicant now, it no longer relies on the Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) libraries it used to. As David mentioned, it has some downsides, such as reliance on one server, but it has worked well for me for some years now.
It isn't in fdroid at the moment, which used to be because of the GCM requirement, skimming the web now it looks like it's because of trademark issues (signal being not happy to have a rebuilt version be called 'signal') - https://forum.f-droid.org/t/signal-in-f-droid-in-2018/2847 >From reading that thread it looks like there may be several forks which basically just rename it which you may be able to find, or you could install the APK from signal's website, or (as I have done) install it using the Aurora Store app (which is available from Fdroid). Conversations clearly has lots going for it, and I may well give it a go in the future. But it took ages to get my friends and family using something free and secure and not facebook controlled (signal, rather than whatsapp); I don't think asking them all to change again would be particularly well received, plus I'd have to find a different client for friends using iOS. For now, for me, Signal offers the best set of compromises. Best of luck, Nick Quoth Fil Lupin: > Hello, > I read again a bit about Signal app and the license is GPLv3 for client and > AGPLv3 for server. > However, this app use servers with a (very) few metadata (day of last > connection, but not who interact with you). > I wondered how you feel about using this app considering privacy. > > About Signal : > https://theintercept.com/2015/11/12/edward-snowden-explains-how-to-reclaim-your-privacy/ > > Cheers, > > - Fil Lupin. > _______________________________________________ > Replicant mailing list > [email protected] > https://lists.osuosl.org/mailman/listinfo/replicant _______________________________________________ Replicant mailing list [email protected] https://lists.osuosl.org/mailman/listinfo/replicant
