XMPP is generally better, since it has been around for about 20 years and so is a lot more solid (fewer bugs, more (lightweight) clients, etc.). Matrix is only 5 years old and so has fewer clients and bridges available. > Nick, for XMPP (with OMEMO) on iOS you can use https://chatsecure.org/ I would currently recommend against ChatSecure since their OMEMO support is incomplete (see https://omemo.top/ for details) and their client has some other serious issues that have been open for multiple years, such as https://github.com/ChatSecure/ChatSecure-iOS/issues/844 . My personal suggestion would be Siskin IM, since it has complete OMEMO support and does not suffer from bugs like the one for ChatSecure above. You can find out more here: https://siskin.im/ I don't have any particular relation to either project, except that I run a service which uses XMPP, so I have interacted with these projects more than most.
