How long is the lease on your DHCP server? I know many network admins have
their DHCP server set up to give out new IP addresses when the lease
expires. I saw this same problem on my configuration and narrowed it down
to:

1. The IP address expired before the machine was turned off/restarted, AND
2. The machines are set to get a different IP address every time the lease
expires, or the machine gets restarted.

I think what happens is that the Retrospect client binds to the IP address
at startup. If the IP address changes, the client won't know the new IP
address until it's restarted. Irena, is this correct?

This might also explain why the laptops work since they are probably turned
on and off more frequently then desktops. I remedied all this by just
giving back the same IP address after the lease expires. I guess you could
also extend the lease period and just hope the users shut down/restart their
computer before the lease expired. By the way, my lease time is 3 days, but
I've see admins use much longer time periods like 7 or 10 days.

Hope this helps.
J.

Subject: Win2K SP1 client...

Is anybody aware of problems with Win2K SP1 clients? They don't show up in
the
servers client-add list, unless i restart the client, manually. This is only
on
Win2K systems with SP1 installed and don't have a static ip address. Maybe
it's
got something to do with the fact that they are in a subnet (mask
255.255.255.128/bcast x.x.x.127).

The client upgrade to 5.15 didn't help... O yeah! very important, it appears
to
work perfectly well with laptops, running Win2K SP1 on the same subnet. The
only difference compared to the desktops is that their NIC runs at 11MBit/s
instead of 100MBit/s....
