I agree this sounds odd that's what I thought

Basically the client just died. I can't explain it any other way. The icon
did not appear at start-up. Looking at the CP it said failed to load at
startup. Machine name and user name not present. They were. We deleted
sharing prefs etc, rekeyed the user name etc etc same effect.

We reinstalled the client from the CD after deleting the old one no joy.

Then deleted the keyspan stuff and the cp (again) and reinstalled. works

I know it does not sound right. I have a keyspan adaptor & sw with retro
client and works fine.

unfortunately I did not spend time analysing why by running specific
extension combinations etc as it was a 4d server which needed to come back

I was amazed I had a problem at all as retro usually has zero problems. So
few in fact I found out it was not backing up this mac by pure chance
