This is basically what I had in mind. By default have comments use variable width text (as they do now) and not be interpreted as code, but if certain indentation is applied (ala StackOverflow) then the text is interpreted as code, a fixed width font is applied and the code is highlighted accordingly. Adding a small toolbar in the comment box's text input to simplify adding a code block could make this even better.
