@rxin @sryza do you have an opinion on this? It'd be good to resolve this
and https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/5250 one way or the other. This is a
narrower approach that lets the caller make sense of exceptions rather than
smother them. The cost is the weight of more code and a slightly-different API.
I'm neutral at best but I think other opinions are necessary here.
