I'm not sure how realistic this can be outside benchmarking mode. Also we
will likely work on some code to substantially speed up shuffle, and as a
result maybe this won't be as necessary? My worry with checking this in is that
it will make it slightly harder to change the interfaces in the future (just
more files to muck around).
