The original motivation of extending the session catalog is to support v2 providers, e.g. Delta extends the session catalog to support `CREATE TABLE ... USING delta`. The doc says `This catalog shares its identifier namespace with the $SESSION_CATALOG_NAME and must be consistent with it`, so @rdblue is right that it's OK for the extended v2 session catalog to support namespaces that have additional nesting, as long as it's still able to load and use v1 tables in the Hive metastore. I don't have a problem with it, but I'd like to point out that this use case has not been called out explicitly before (or I missed something).
