    I really appreciate keeping the PR small in scope to make it easier to 
review -- but I am also a little torn that I have a hard time seeing concretely 
the advantage of this.  I gather this has something to do with Parquet, but I 
don't see the connection.  Can you perhaps at least link the existing jira to 
the larger change to put it in context?  Not that I see anything wrong w/ these 
changes per se, but they are also not useful by themselves.
    
    (sorry I hate myself for saying this ... I have been on the other end of 
this argument and I know its hard to balance having narrowly scoped PRs for 
easy review and also making the utility clear.)
