I don't think we should add more dependencies for tests and I don't see why
we need plyr. The `transform` function in R is defined at
https://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/base/html/transform.html and one
thing is that the generic / method we define needs to exactly match the
definition there (including the names of variables etc.)
