This test doesn't run unless plyr is installed. Not sure why.
I think the mutate signature doesn't match either. I will update them.

we need plyr. The `transform` function in R is defined at
https://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/base/html/transform.html and one
thing is that the generic / method we define needs to exactly match the
definition there (including the names of variables etc.)
