I like the idea of fixing this for 1.6, but based on the discussion above,
it seems like the appropriate timeout varies widely, so I'm worried if we set
the timeout high enough to be effective, it may also lead to big performance
issues for other people (and I'm also hesitant to "expose" this feature more if
we're about to change it)
