`10.00` is an exact numeric value. `10.0e10` is an approximate numeric
value, or a floating point number. That is the major reason why they should
have different data types.
For approximate numeric value, the data types in SQL have FLOAT, REAL and
DOUBLE.
DECIMAL is part of Exact numeric data types, including INTEGER, SMALLINT
and NUMERIC.
Let me give some references. For example, in Informix, we have a
[floating-point decimal
literals](https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSGU8G_12.1.0/com.ibm.sqls.doc/ids_sqs_1605.htm)
and [fixed-point decimal literals
](https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSGU8G_12.1.0/com.ibm.sqls.doc/ids_sqs_1606.htm).
Will try to find more references.
