I've been thinking about this some more and I wonder about the motivation
for this change: how much of a performance benefit does this buy us for typical
workloads? This (and the other torrentbroadcast inlining patch) add extra
code-paths / complexity, but do they buy us measurable performance benefits?
I'm concerned about adding extra branches to already-complicated code.
