The event logs are actually user facing to a certain extent so I think it's
important to present a nice format to the user, in case they want to consume
the logs independently of the history server or the standalone master. I think
it's worth the extra code to keep this exterior user-friendly, and IMO the
extra logic is fairly simple to reason about.
