My point is that if we leave random bytes in the header then it's
impossible for the user to write code to parse it themselves without digging
into our code. I actually think we should expose the parsing code as a
developer API once we have a stable format, in which case either of our designs
is fine.
Anyway, I'm merging this into master and 1.2. I'll add a few comments
myself, but thanks for keeping this one updated for a long time.
