I agree with John, ORCID is a very widely used and supported identifier for
academic, open source, and commercial publishers. It's been in wide use for
more than 10 years and was founded by large publishers who will
likely continue to use it as it solves a problem for them. It's a
member-supported organization, and they seem to be running in the black
consistently from a quick glance at their finances.

On other topics raised, I have a preference for "designing for change" and
using URNs, but I'm not gonna die on that hill.
