Arie,
To answer your questions:
1. You can integrate a SAMBA server quite easily into a Win2K
environment provided:
a) You use the latest versions of SAMBA (2.1 and later)
b) Set the workgroup directive in the config file to 'workgroup = <your
Windows domain>
c) Set the security directive in the config file to 'security = domain'
d) As the root user, join the SAMBA server to the Windows domain using
'smbpasswd -j <domain>'
e) All windows users who use the samba server have to have a valid
Linux account or otherwise use /etc/samba/smbusers to map Windows users
to existing Linux accounts.
f) As stated before, use the SWAT utility to configure your SAMBA
server
2. You don't need a Windows DC for an authentication server in an office
environment. You can setup something like a Kerberos or LDAP server
which is available under Linux. However, a DC would be the easiest to
setup and administer. Furthermore, a Linux SAMBA server can emulate a
Windows PDC, therefore you can have your Windows and Linux workstations
both authenticating users off the central Linux SAMBA server.
3. See above. You can setup a Linux SAMBA server as your authentication
server for Windows and Linux clients. NIS is another centralised
authentication server solution, however it may not suit your
environment. Three reasons:
a) On its own NIS is insecure - information between client and server
is in clear text (unencrypted), including passwords.
b) NIS is really solely for a Unix/Linux network environment
c) On its own NIS is insecure ;-)
NIS (Network Information Service) simply put is a way of storing
UNIX/Linux /etc configuration files on a central server. Files like
/etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group and /etc/hosts. So Linux/Unix
workstations can use the NIS server for their configuration files.
Hope this answers your questions.
