I was now suscessful with a http install, using the mounted DVD iso. It 
works as it should.

Question: Why is the DVD iso not available in the RHN software channel 
for rhel 5 beta 1?

I had found only the CD images there. The DVD.iso seems only to be in 
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/beta/RHEL5-Beta1/server/i386
