Thanks for these tips John, I felt sure you had the answer there. It all
made perfect sense.

So, I logged into RHN, indeed found my guest under the virtualisation
entitlements, so I removed it, then completely reinstalled the guest
without using the installation number, then tried to register the new guest
with RHN - and guess what - same error message :-(

Yes, this is what I would expect. Don't remove the profile, just
unsubscribe from the virtualization channel if it is checked. Then try
to register the system.

"The installation number you provided is valid but was already activated
and the subscriptions have already been used by systems in your
organization or is not usable for this system.
Please try a different number or try another option listed on the 'Access
a Subscription' screen."

This suggests that you somehow used the installation number again, or
I can't imagine why you would get an error talking about the
installation number.

I really don't understand what's going on. Am still waiting for Red Hat to
respond to my ticket about this. Like you say - this reg process should
understand that it is a virtual environment and it is OK to reuse the
existing number!

Your host does have a VIrtualization entitlement doesn't it? There
should be a place on RHN that lists these, along with management,
provisioning, etc.

John
