Sorry - thats exactly what I did - unchecked the virtualisation entitlement
for my guest.

I am using rhn_register to try and register the guest and it asks me for an
installation number.  It will not let me register without one:

"You must enter an Installation Number that activates subscriptions in your
account.   [OK]"

Yes, this is what I would expect. Don't remove the profile, just
unsubscribe from the virtualization channel if it is checked. Then try
to register the system.

This suggests that you somehow used the installation number again, or
I can't imagine why you would get an error talking about the
installation number.

Your host does have a VIrtualization entitlement doesn't it? There
should be a place on RHN that lists these, along with management,
provisioning, etc.
