Actually I think I've worked round this problem.

It seems that rhn_register and rhnreg_ks work differently!

I ran rhnreg_ks as follows....

rhnreg_ks --profilename "<myguest>" --username "<myid>" --email "<myemail>"
--password "<mypass>" --subscription "<mysubscriptionnumber>"

And I specified exactly the same ID, passwd, and subscription number as I
did in the rhn_register screens, but crucially this method works!

Thanks for this info Matthias. Unfortunately I could not see any details
pertaining to registration of virtualised guests in there.

Do you know where I can find some guidelines or assistance to register my
RHEL5 guest without being told that my Installation Number has already been
used up?

The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Installation Number is a 16-character
hexadecimal text string used during the installation process. The
installation number enables a user to install the full set of supported
packages included with the subscription. For a limited set of Red Hat
Enterprise Linux subscribers, the installation number is also used to
activate subscriptions for additional Red Hat products and services. It
replaces the Subscription Number from earlier versions of Red Hat
Enterprise Linux.
