The comment in MY syslog.conf is: # Logging much else clutters up the screen. #kern.* /dev/console
This comment is only preventing logging kernel messahes to the console, it has nothing to do with what goes to /var/log/messages. The man page explains the format of the syslog.conf file, and what you need to look at are the entries pertaining to /var/log/messages...
