If all you care about is security updates, you can do

yum --security update

That will only install security updates without changing the version of
Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Having said that, we guarantee kernel space ABI and API compatibility
for the seven year lifecycle of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. We also don't
change userland except for rebasing things like Open Office, Firefox,
Thunderbird and the like.

In other words, you should not have any problems updating from 5.1 to
5.2. It is not really an upgrade, it is an update. All the key
components like the kernel and glibc stay at one revision throughout the
life cycle of the version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. You should not
fear updating.

Having said that, it is always a smart idea to test your app in a
sandbox where you've applied updates to the OS before you update your
production environment.
