Take a look at Mondo Rescue - its excellent for exactly this purpose. I've used it in the past for bare-metal recoveries for Disaster Recovery.

The requirement is that we do this whilst the machines are running, as it's not practical to reboot them all regularly. The basic idea being that if a machine has a complete meltdown we can restore the OS and partitioning scheme as quickly as possible, and then begin restoring data from other backups.
