This is an important topic and I'm glad to see someone (Professor Kent)
has submitted this article. This topic will be the center of an important
debate here as it is in Israel. It is by no means settled that the wall is
a bad thing and it is practically unanimous that everyone dislikes the
wall.
That is not the real issue.
That is not the area of greatest concern, whether one likes or
dislikes it, however. What is of greatest concern over this issue is how
many lives it can save and if it is truly a land grab or a necessary move
on the part of the government.
SECURITY FENCE SAVED LIVES
What is not mentioned in this essay is the latest move by the Israeli
Supreme Court to require the placement of the wall to be moved in several
locations, which is being done. The World Court issues a suggestion, not a
binding dictate, and it has been rejected. The reason it has been rejected
is because the result of having the wall constructed and completed in
areas where it has been for almost a year is the reduction of suicide
attack on Israel by 80%. It has saved lives.
DO JEWS HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN THE TERRITORIES?
That is a fact which is hard to argue with by any faction who opposes the
wall. Even many on the left supported the wall and some did not, which is
why Gila has her position and others on the left wing of Israeli politics
takes the opposite view. As to placement, it seems that is being altered
whereever it can be determined that doing so would not reduce Israel's
security. As for the settlements, these seem to be the major crux of any
problem since those on the left who really object to the wall now, in
spite of lives it may have saved, is the fact that it does jut into the
territories in areas where it is necessary to protect settlements -- and
that is in itself an area of conflict. Do Jews also have the right to live
where they want? (Arabs live in Israel so why not Jews in the territories
or will it be Judenrien as is Jordan and Saudi Arabia and other areas in
the Middle East?).
So you see this is a complicated issue which can't simple be deemed wrong
or have alterior motives. It is a security fence. That is what Israel
calls it. Those who oppose it call it a wall. You must be willing to see
this from all views, left, left and right and not just right or wrong.
There are nuances. Let us discuss them here.
HUMAN LIVE VS PROPERTY RIGHTS
My position is I am not an Israeli and it is not my right to decide for
them. As to the injustice, it is, however, my right to have a view based
on my humanity and there is a saying in the Talmud that "To save even one
life, is to save the world." It is my view that property rights should
ever exceed the right to life. If the fence saves lives, then every effort
should be made to not infringe on the property rights of Palestinians (and
Jews) predicated and subject to first of all the ability of that placement
of the "security fence" to save lives...
