Oh god it's tempting to take this whole rant of Donnella's out to lunch ... ;) and make it the piece de resistance! I suppose, if we take the view that almost everybody around the Eastern Mediterranean was more than a little sick of Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire's mismanagement of its Empire at the time the Caliphate burst out onto the international scene. But why, oh why, oh why do we just focus on the Muslim world? Why not on the Vikings and before them, the Saxons and their allies, the Goths and their allies, the Franks and their allies, the Huns and their allies, etc. Ditto the Han in China and their relentless push out of the south of what is now China, northwards. And at any rate, both Zionism and Arab nationalism seem to come from the same tainted vine of European ethnic nationalism that also gave rise to Germany's National Socialist Party. To wit, that only one ethnicity should inhabit a given area. It's impossible, like insisting on the same for religion - and the Middle Ages gives the lie to the idea that that is achievable, let alone desirable - before Christianity became the Icelandic state religion, Icelanders were all over Western Europe and the Middle East. Afterwards, they got stuck-in-the-mud. And their sagas became rote and boring.
