Which kinda brings it all down to the same old question of _POWER_, doesn't it?

When a religion has no power, it tends to be meek and mild, and to attract only
the most dedicated. When it gains power, it tends to attract the power-hungry.
When it has absolute power - well, I read a fictionalized biography of Martin
Luther once that had a joke about a German Jew who visited Rome. After he
returned, he converted to Christianity immediately. When asked by the priest
why, he said, "Well, I saw how corrupt the whole thing was, and thought, if such
an organization can survive such corruption, God must be somwhere behind it."

I'm reminded of another quotation I can't ascribe to anyone, that one can only
choose between power or love. (Love being the blanket cover word for making
other people important in one's life, being part of a community; power is of
course the opposite, making them unimportant and oneself uniquely important.)

Of course, love is useless without having some power to implement it; but only
that amount that is necessary. (And good grief, I'm starting to sound like a
mystic! Ouch! I'd sooner sound like one of Clive Barker's mystifs - they have
more fun! "Imajica" ;)
