Whoops, I was wrong. This war started a good deal before then. Actually, it
goes back, in one form or another, for thousands of years. About a hundred
years ago, Britain had a go at drawing up the present maps of the countries
in the Middle East, at least as we understand them today. Problem was, most
of those new "nations" contained multiple tribes that never have gotten
along with one another. But, Britain figured that they could come along and
fix, in a few short years, a situation that had taken millenia to get to the
condition it was in then. It didn't exactly work. Now, the United States is
having a try at it. I have a bet that, like Britain's efforts before us,
this effort will meet with somewhat less than stellar results. Anybody want
to take the opposite bet? (Note: We're trying to install Democracy in Iraq
at the moment. Problem is, the natives there, when you get right down to it,
don't want Democracy. They want a Militant Islamic dictatorship government.
The only question is, which one. Sunni? Shi-Ite? Wahabbi? Maybe others?
Whichever one wins, it will have to fight off the others.)

Yes it started when Bush senior left an army in Saudi Arabia to help his oil
cronies, who are far, far from democratic ideals.
